Sometimes a glittering career hides some of the saddest stories. Lolo Jones, who took home the USA as well as the World Championships for hurdle events in 2013, achieved this feat with a lot of effort and tremendous patience. Jones, who was born to a motherless family with five children suffering from poverty and hardships when she was a kid, endured an extremely difficult early life. She was constantly moving around, and had even lived in the basement of a church for some length of time. Jones was in a mobile and nomadic lifestyle up until she enrolled in high school, had to transfer to a brand new school every year. Jones had to live away from mother in Theodore Roosevelt School in order pursue her love of track. She stayed in four homes during her time in high school so that she could attend all of her classes at one time. Jones was awarded her Gatorade track and field Athlete-of-the Year award while at the high school level. As a student cellist, Jones was also part of her school's school orchestra. Jones was one of the best hurdlers in her age group at the time she entered college. In 2002, at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 2002, Jones took home the 100-meter hurdles. She also was part of the winning team for the 100-meter relay. Jones has been the NCAA Champion indoor hurdles both in 2003 and 2014. Jones began training in 2005, when she completed her education. She won both in the Torino Memorial and the Heusden Track events in the same year.
